Skills are learned step-by-step so that each student can move comfortably from one level to the other. Safety and confidence in the water are the first goals---after that, stroke technique and more difficult skills are mastered. We believe that swimming is for everyone and GTAC is the place where everyone can swim.

Can You Swim?

GTAC and the Josh Project Save Lives

GTAC believes that everyone can learn how to swim. Children with disabilities, adults who believe that they could never learn----swimming is truly the only universal sport that everyone can learn to enjoy.   Most of all, everyone should learn how to swim in order to be water safe. Among urban children aged 5-15, drowning is the leading accidental cause death.  African-American children who reside in the central city are 2 to 5 times more likely to drown than others.  GTAC wants to help everyone learn this life-saving activity and life sport, so we offer swim lesson year round.

We  are proud to be working with Wanda Butts and The Josh Project through which we provide discounted private swim lessons for those who cannot afford them, for as long as they need them in order to be water safe. Wanda lost her son Josh in August, 2006 to drowning. See the Toledo Blade article about the Josh Project here and a video produced by USA Swimming here Since starting in June, dozens of children have passed our Water Safety Test, and more than 400 have taken lessons.

Josh Project Lessons for 2009-2010 will be offered on Saturdays from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.

Forms will be available  at the St. Francis Natatorium during Josh Project swim lesson times.  You still must contact Ms. Wanda Butts to apply!
